The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free basic tax preparation services to qualified individuals.

This free service is available to residents of Stearns, Benton, and Sherburne counties with an income of $60,000 or less.


The tax program is a volunteer run service provided in the community. We have transitioned our program to screening (drop off) appointments only. These appointments take approximately 30 minutes when we are fully staffed with volunteers. When we are short volunteers, expect delays. At this time, these appointments WILL NOT complete property tax/renter rebates unless you are also filing a tax return.

  • Income Tax Appointment
    If you have income taxes AND a rent credit or property taxes, you can book this appointment. If you only have a rent credit or property taxes to file, you need to book the "Rent Credit or Property Taxes" Appointment. This appointment generally takes 15-30 minutes sitting with a volunteer or Tri-CAP staff to review your tax paperwork before you leave it with us to prepare and review. If we are short volunteers, expect delays in being seen. Your return will not be completed the same day, we will call you when your return is completed. 
  • Rent Credit or Property Tax ONLY
    If you have a rent credit or property tax you'd like to file WITHOUT a Federal/State Income Tax return, you can book this appointment. These appointments are only available from March 13, 2024 - April 8, 2024. This appointment generally takes 15-30 minutes sitting with a volunteer or Tri-CAP staff to review your tax paperwork before you leave it with us to prepare and review. If we are short volunteers, expect delays in being seen. Your return will not be completed the same day, we will call you when your return is completed.
